Let’s cover the BASICS!
- There are 24 breeds of hamsters
- 5 species
are domesticated
- Hamsters are small creatures only 2-4 inches in length
In the wild they live in underground burrows
They would dig different chambers for sleeping storing their food and using the bathroom. They will live about 1.5-2 years. The dwarf hamsters can live up to 3 years!
FUN FACT! Hamsters communicate through chemicals called pheromones which secreted from their body. This helps them communicate and impact the behavior between the different members of a species.
Housing
- Cage is the most expensive cost you will encounter
- The cage should provide the hamster with a room for eating, sleeping and a
way for it to exercise on a wheel or spinner.
Types of Cages:
Wire Cages
Glass Aquariums
Supplies:
- Food dish: you either can attach it to the side of the cage or place it inside the cage. It helps keep the cage clean because the droppings and urine with not mix with it’s food. It does use it’s cheek pockets to carry the food back to it’s sleeping area.
- Exercise Wheel:
- Hamsters love to exercise. They can run for hours. And they can run several miles a day! It’s been
recorded that hamsters have run up to 8 miles on one night on the exercise wheel.
- Water bottle:
- Just like any other animal hamsters need a water bottle. For tanks you can hang it on the side of the
cage, and for wire cages you can hook it on the outside of the cage
- Little house/ nesting box:
- Hamsters need a little nesting box for their sleeping area. It provides a secure and safe little place
for them to sleep. It is a hiding place to escape from loud noises.
- Toys: Like any other pets, it’s fun to give your hamster! Make sure to give them something that is ok
to be chewed! Wooden chew toys are nice, it helps them keep their growing teeth down!
- Run-Around Balls: They a great form of exercise for your little pet!
